What is a scale-up system?
A scale-up system is used to increase production scale from lab scale or pilot scale, for example. The purpose of this kind of system is usually to prepare a product for commercialization on an industrial scale. Different components make up scale-up systems; however, there are three essential parts: scale-up in scale, from lab to pilot scale, and scale from pilot scale to production. These three steps can be completed with several different types of equipment customized for the individual process being used.
Scaleup in scale: scale-up in scale is transferring a reaction from lab scale to pilot scale. This requires using equipment that can handle larger volumes and still reproduce high-quality products under good operating conditions.
Scaleup from lab to pilot scale: this step involves adapting an existing laboratory production procedure to work on a smaller scale than initially developed.
Scale-up from pilot scale to production: scaling up means increasing the size or output capacity of something, such as manufacturing processes, machines, etc., beyond its intended use. It has been said that “the most difficult stage in fine chemical manufacture” is moving products and processes designed at the benchtop level (downscaled) into commercial quantities (mass-produced).
Knowing how scale-up systems work is essential if you want to scale your business. If you are not familiar with the term, scale-up means increasing production to meet demand. There are 3 ways that scale-up processes can be made easier for you and your company:
1) Standardize all of your operating procedures so they can be applied across the board when needed
2) Incorporate lean manufacturing principles into your scale-up process
3) Take a systematic approach by developing a plan before implementing any changes or upgrades.
How can you make scale up systems easier?
It is vital to make scale up systems easier for you and your company to scale it successfully. Scale-up means increasing production to meet demand. There are ways that scale-up processes can be made more accessible: standardizing operating procedures, making them able to be applied across the board, taking a systematic planning approach before implementing anything, incorporate lean manufacturing principles scale-up process.
