VPS hosting is a type of hosting service which uses virtual servers as opposed to actual servers. In full, VPS stands for Virtual Private Servers. There are basically two types of VPS website hosting plans. The first is cloud VPS, which relies on cloud computing. The resources of multiple servers are harnessed to create a virtual server. This virtual super-server can be “partitioned” using special programs to come up with different types of VPS website hosting plans. The second type of VPS is traditional VPS, which is achieved by partitioning the hard drive of a single server according to the needs of the client. Cloud VPS is much more reliable than traditional VPS because the “cloud” is completely redundant. Both types of hosting have the following benefits:
i) Custom Virtual Servers
The main benefit of virtual private servers is that clients can specify the RAM, storage space and bandwidth they need for their website. For instance, if a client needs 50GB of storage, the hosting firm will partition the hard drive of a server to come up with a VPS which meets the needs of the client. With traditional hosting plans, such as shared or dedicated hosting, consumers are forced to sign up for hosting plans with resources which may either be insufficient or too much, leading to either wastage of resources due to under-utilization or server crashes due to excessive demand on the server.
ii) Increased Reliability
Unlike shared hosting where clients share the resources of computer servers without any restrictions, VPS allocates specific storage spaces to individual clients according to their needs. This means that clients in a VPS plan cannot exceed the storage spaces they are allocated. Therefore, server crashes are less likely, meaning VPS plans are more reliable. With cloud-based VPS, the service is much more reliable than traditional VPS since servers are located in different locations. If a data center is destroyed by a fire or a major power outage affects a data center, the service will not be affected.
iii) Increased Scalability
Since demand for server resources may increase with time, most VPS plans offer increased scalability to address this challenge. Clients can upgrade their plans without having to sign up for a different hosting plan. In fact, cloud VPS offers automatic scalability and the service is metered, so users only pay for the resources they use.
iv) Enhanced Security and Privacy
VPS plans come with dedicated IP addresses, making it possible for users to secure their websites. These plans also offer greater privacy than shared hosting plans since users do not share storage spaces.
Compared to dedicated server hosting, VPS plans are much more affordable. After all, there is efficient utilization of resources while metered billing is offered by most VPS providers.
