Buying A Home In Portugal’s Algarve

When it comes to buying real estate Algarve region of Portugal is one of the most sought after areas in Europe. The 155 km stretch of coast along the Mediterranean is home to some of Europe’s best beaches, exciting resorts and small picturesque towns, while inland the countryside is just as spectacular. There is plenty of choice when it comes to real estate, ranging from apartments to villas and cottages; most have some sort of outdoor space to make the most of the almost perfect year round climate. Portugal is still one of Europe’s most affordable countries and buying property here is easier than in some other European countries, with fewer restrictions on foreigners owning a home.

Another advantage of buying property here is that the Algarve is a fairly compact region; in fact, most places are within an hour’s drive from Faro and its international airport which is the area’s largest city and it’s main gateway. Portugal also boasts one of Europe’s best road systems, and roads are generally well maintained, well signposted and unless you are in one of the most popular destinations, often free from traffic jams. The entire area is also connected by a train line that roughly parallels the coast and as in many other popular areas of Europe, English is widely spoken and understood.

About 90 beaches in the Algarve are what is known as Blue Flag beaches, meaning they have been recognized as being pollution free, environmentally friendly and generally suitable for families. Of course, almost every beach offers a variety of water sports, and windsurfing, sailing, diving and swimming are popular all along the coast. If you want to play golf while living here, you are spoiled for choice as the Algarve boasts over 50 courses, including some of Europe’s best. The warm climate allows you to play golf later in the season than in many other parts of Europe.

Although the Algarve is perhaps best known for its beaches, golf and climate, it’s also home to several protected coastal areas, parks and natural reserves. The Rio Formosa is one of the largest parks and bird sanctuaries, stretching for about 60km and the habitat of numerous bird species. Away from the busy coastal resorts, the Algarve is also home to picturesque fishing villages, and several historic towns, several with Roman remains. And this area of Portugal is also known for its fine seafood, and distinctive wines.
