The brain is the central hub of all of our activities and thoughts. It is made up of soft tissue with nerves branching out to various areas of the body. Any injury to this vital organ can have disastrous consequences. Therefore, we must protect it at all cost. It would be prudent to learn about the most common causes of brain injury so that we can take the necessary steps to avoid them. There are two main types: traumatic and non-traumatic. The former refers to cases wherein there is a violent blow to the head. The latter tends to be triggered by internal anomalies and dysfunctions.
Work Accidents
There are many jobs that put workers in the line of danger. For example, construction workers will often need to go up tall scaffoldings to complete the project and renovators may have to go up on the roof to fix leaks. One wrong move and they could fall down a long way to the ground. Hard objects can fall from above and land on them without warning. This is why protective gear such as harnesses and helmets are crucial. Police, soldiers, and firefighters also put themselves in danger to get the job done. They often use vests, helmets, shields, and other equipment to protect themselves.
Vehicle Crashes
Sometimes the trauma comes from accidental collisions such as in vehicle crashes. Those who are riding motorcycles are particularly at risk of experiencing traumatic brain injury. Being on two wheels is inherently unstable. You could topple over easily if you hit anything, go too fast, or slip on a wet road. Head injuries are the main cause of fatalities. By law, all motorcyclists must wear a helmet for their own safety. The same is true for their passengers. Even those who are inside a car can sustain injuries to the head as well because of the force of impact. Wearing a seatbelt is a must. Installing airbags can help.
Stroke
Finally, we discuss stroke which is the leading cause of non-traumatic brain injuries. This can happen if there is a damage to blood vessels in and around the brain. It could be a blocked artery that is preventing blood to pass through. It could also be a blood vessel that has somehow burst or leaked. This could be temporary such that the blood flow resumes soon after, preventing permanent damage. Sometimes it could be bad enough to cause paralysis, impaired motor function, coma, or even death. Drugs may trigger a stroke such as stimulants that tend to increase the blood pressure.
