What is HCPS? HCPS stands for Howard County Public School System. HCPS is a school system that operates in Maryland, USA, and has over 186 schools with more than 90,000 students enrolled (HCPS). HCPS’ main goal is to provide an outstanding education so every student can graduate prepared for college and career success.
To accomplish this, HCPS uses Common Core State Standards, also known as CCSS or simply the standards. The US Department of Education created these standards across states allowing parents to know if their child was on track no matter what form they were attending. HCPS decided to implement these standards because it provides consistency among all teachers throughout the district, helps prepare students for higher learning institutions such as colleges, enhances critical thinking skills, and allows HCPS better prepare students for the 21st Century job market.
The standards also provide HCPS an opportunity to build upon and strengthen existing practices. This is why HCPS has created a series of resources called Professional Learning Communities that provide teachers with opportunities to learn strategies, collaborate, and share best practices. These communities include: Leadership Teams(LT), Coding Clubs, Math Meetings, Science Circles, Education Technology Collaboratives (ETC), Reading Research Study Groups (RRGS), Writing Fellows Program (WFP). The purpose of these groups is so everyone in HCPS can work together towards common goals while continuing to improve themselves personally and their capabilities within HCPS.
These communities allow HCPS to develop the strongest leaders, teachers, and students ready for the future.
Housing School Districts Consolidated Plan ( HCPS) is committed to excellence by striving for continuous improvement in all programs and services. This includes providing opportunities that will further develop the leadership skills of County principals. Principals play an integral role within HCPS as they serve many vital functions such as: being responsible for student achievement; implementing HCPS policies with faculty/staff; holding staff accountable through adequate supervision of instruction; acting as the liaison between parents and HC PS administration; collaborating with other administrators on key initiatives affecting HCPS schools.
The HCPS Standards are a set of guidelines for school leaders that the HCPS Board has established.
This article will outline 3 significant points in these HCPS Standards, including job descriptions, professional development opportunities, and evaluation criteria.
- Job description should be specific to the position being applied for so that HCPS can identify what is needed from each leader.
Professional development should include coaching on classroom management techniques and how to engage with families and other stakeholders effectively.
- Evaluation should consider both quantitative data (e.g., standardized test scores) and qualitative data (e.g., student feedback).
HCPS has standards designed to cultivate influential school leaders who will help HCPS meet its mission of providing an outstanding education for all students.
