No matter what we do, we can only have 24 hours in a single day. We cannot buy even a single second even if we could spend a million dollars. Time is priceless and is therefore our most precious resource. Yet most of us squander our time doing things that do not help us in the long term. Our productivity is far below our potential. If you wish to earn more, save more, and retire early, then you should start improving your personal productivity. This is particularly true for freelancers and other people who get paid per output.
Simplify Your Life
Begin by simplifying your life. Perhaps you are spreading yourself too thin by taking on too many projects. Focus on your main tasks and evaluate side gigs to see if they are worth your time. Are you getting enough compensation for the work that you put in? If not, then consider dropping or minimizing your time in these tasks. Do more of what actually puts food on the table. Think about other things that might be taking much of your time and money but is ultimately unsatisfactory. You’ll know what to do if you are honest with yourself.
Eliminate Distractions
Few people actually work the whole time from 9-to-5. Most will probably work half the time and engage in distractions the rest of their hours. They might surf the web for the latest news on their favorite sports teams or read social media posts. They might watch online videos one after the other. They might talk about any topic under the sun with their colleagues or friends and forget about the clock. Observe yourself for a week and note your most common distractions. Find ways to minimize those such as putting your phone on airplane mode while working.
Plan Your Days
Get a planner and use it every night. Summarize the things your accomplished in the current day and plan ahead for the next day. This will clear up your mind and make you ready to tackle everything in the morning. You won’t waste much time if you already know what you need to do and what it takes to finish all of them.
