Stoicism is a school of thought that traces its roots to the ancient Greeks. It’s a unique way of thinking about the world and how best we can live in it. Some of the most famous stoics include Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the statesman Seneca, and the slave Epictetus. A few of their writings have survived, allowing us to learn more about the Stoic Mindset that they practiced thousands of years ago. The philosophy is timeless which is why stoicism is still relevant today. Master the Stoic Mindset by practicing the following:
Respond with Kindness or Not at All
They believed that people should hold themselves to a high standard. When interacting with others, offer genuine kindness. This is true no matter how others treat you. Even if someone is mean, either continue to respond with kindness or not at all. Do not engage in gossip or idle chitchat. When talking, be brief about what you wish to say. Listen more that you may learn rather than dominating the conversation.
Focus on What You Can Control
The world is a tough place to live in. Many turn to despair because of all the hardships and their inability to change things. According to the stoics, it is best to focus your energies on the things that you can control and let go of what you can’t. For example, you will not be able to do anything about what the critics say about you but you can control how you respond to their attacks. Instead of bring driven to anger, you can simply ignore them and turn your attention to people who matter. You do not have the power to change the world but you can change your life, so do that instead.
Embrace Whatever Life Brings
Stoics are not worried about the future. They focus on the now because only the present moment is real. The past is already gone and the future is yet to be created. They embrace whatever fate’s hand deals to them and adapt accordingly. This concept is also known as amor fati or the love of fate.
Exercise Gratitude Over What You Have
They keep a positive outlook by being grateful for the things that they already have instead of agonizing over the things that they don’t. After all, many of the things that we currently enjoy were once things that we desired. They may have unfulfilled dreams but they are mindful of their good fortunes as well.
