What is the origin of colored contacts?
The first thing to note is that not all contacts are created equal. There are two main types of contacts: cosmetic and vision correction. Cosmetic lenses are worn for purely aesthetic reasons, while vision correction lenses are worn to improve eyesight.
It’s thought that the first contact lenses were invented in 150 AD by a Roman physician named Antonius Musa Baebius. He created them out of thin sheets of gold and fitted them onto the eyes with the help of beeswax. While this sounds pretty uncomfortable, it’s worth noting that these early lenses were not meant to be worn for long periods of time.
The modern version of contact lenses was invented in 1887 by a German ophthalmologist named Adolf Fick. His lenses were made out of glass and had a diameter of just 13mm. They were held in place by suction and did not move with the eye.
While Fick’s lenses were a major improvement over Baebius’s, they still had some drawbacks. For one thing, they could only be worn for a few hours at a time because they caused so much irritation. Additionally, they needed to be removed every night so that the eyes could breathe.
It wasn’t until 1948 that contact lenses became truly comfortable and convenient to wear. That’s when an American optometrist named Kevin Tuohy developed the first soft contact lens. Made out of plastic instead of glass, these lenses were much more comfortable to wear.
