The Sustainable Yoga Wear

Whether a yogi or yogini, having the right wear is an essential aspect. While doing the asana, one will require flexibility and perfect body posture achieved without any strain. Therefore, finding Sustainable Yogawear would not only benefit one person but the entire environment collectively.

Sustainable fashion in general saw to its genesis in the late 1960s when a youth-driven raising of consciousness about the planet and its sources came to being. A love affair with mother earth kindled among many which led to an unpredicted rejection of the fashion system. The fashion industry struggled to imitate the new look. At that time the most eye-catching person in the room would be wearing a thrifted linen top, some patched up old jeans and freshly plucked daisies.

The first companies to embrace eco fashion were Patagonia and ESPRIT who conducted research into the fibers used in the companies. The two companies then co-funded the first organic cotton conference in 1991. In 1992, ESPRIT launched an ecollection comprising of organic cotton, recycled wool and low impact dyes. Patagonia made a companywide commitment to recycled polyester in 1992 and organic cotton in 1996. From 1990s all through to 2000s, the movement in sustainable fashion broadened to include many brands.

Sustainable yoga wear

Sustainable clothing refers to fabrics derived from eco-friendly resources such as recycled materials or sustainably grown fiber crops. Yoga is a spiritual science of self-realization including breath control, simple meditation and the adoption of specific body postures. Sustainable Yogawear is now being integrated into the sustainable fashion. Some of the sustainable materials used are:

Lyocell

It is made from wood pulp using a process which produces as little waste as possible. The fabric has a soft and luxurious feel.

Linen jersey

This fabric is made from natural flax that uses little energy to grow. It has a smooth and soft feel and is suitable for keeping one cool and fresh.

Organic cotton

This fabric is grown without any pesticides or any harmful chemicals. It is usually healthier for the skin, the environment and the people who produce it.

Merino wool

The fabric is the best luxury and comfort as it is warm but incredibly light.

Recycled polyamide

This is a high performance fabric which is recycled form waste which would have eventually gone into landfill. The fabric is blended with elastane to create a durable but lightweight opaque material.
