How to Get There
Guwahati in Assam is the nearest major transport hub to Meghalaya. So from whichever Indian city you are in, either take flight or a train ride to this city, then from here, board a shared cab or taxi to Meghalaya’s capital city, Shillong. If you prefer driving yourself to this destination, you can rent a car online or at the airport in Guwahati.
First Stop: Shillong
The first stop in your Meghalaya camping or backpacking trip will be in Shillong. This city is quite different from your quintessential Indian capital city. Shillong had a slow paced and cozy feeling with a lovely charm of the old world and the energy of the young even though it’s still busy and plagued with traffic just like any other major Indian state capital. There are many idyllic cafes to he hopped, budget shopping to be done at Police Bazaar, and plenty of local cuisines to be sampled at Laitumkhrah in this city.
Second Stop: Nongriat
On this leg of your camping trip, you’ll be able to see the double decker living root bridge other breath-taking natural scenery as you make your way to Nongriat village. Other than the bridge, you’ll get to enjoy the beauty and sounds of the majestic Rainbow Falls. You’ll find camping facilities at either Chally’s Homestay or Byron’s Homestay — both of which are situated on either sides of the living root bridge.
